FPL managers got a much-deserved rest last weekend after a gruelling festive period that featured 4 gameweeks in 15 days. But as Gameweek 23 approaches, we take a look at the 3 burning questions which FPL managers should strongly consider before setting up their team.
1. All aboard the Jesse Lingard bandwagon:
The 25-year-old Englishman has been central to Manchester United’s attack recently, scoring seven and assisting another two goals in the last 9 PL games. He’s scored 70 points since GW 14, a tally bettered by only Mohamed Salah (73). Priced at just £6.3 million, the midfielder is a solid bargain buy. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggling, he is safe from any rotation risk too. With struggling Stoke City set to visit Old Trafford on Monday night, Jesse Lingard is surely in line for another impressive haul.
2. A case for Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata:
The Chelsea pair have irked many FPL managers over the course of the season. And rightly so. In spite of having an easy fixture list on paper, the pair together managed to score just a couple of goals in the last 7 weeks – a very poor return for their price. However, with Morata now fit (but not exactly firing) and a run of fixtures which see Chelsea face four of the 8 worse defensive teams in the Premier League over the next 5 GWs, FPL managers cannot afford to ignore the Chelsea duo. Now that fixture list has eased up for all the Premier League teams, both Hazard and Morata are likely to get more minutes on the pitch and can perform up to their full potential.
3. January arrivals and departures shake up the FPL market:
Coutinho has been transferred out by more than 300,000 managers (and counting) after his money move to Barcelona. If Liverpool don’t sign a replacement, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Adam Lallana might get more time, and are worth keeping an eye over.
Talking of big money, Virgil Van Dijk shouldn’t be left far behind. The defender had a dream debut in the Merseyside derby in the FA Cup, scoring the winner for the Reds and the Anfield faithful are already singing his name out loud. He’s nailed on, very dangerous on set pieces and will definitely improve Liverpool’s defence. Keeping in mind the Dutchman’s attacking prowess inside the box from set-pieces, the £5.4 priced centre-back is certainly one to keep eye on in the coming weeks.
On the other side of Merseyside, Everton have signed forward Cenk Tosun from Besiktas. Priced at £7.5m in FPL, the Turkish hitman is lethal upfront and is an exciting prospect for our squads. However, we will have to wait a bit to see how he settles in the Premier League. Perhaps most importantly though, Tosun’s arrival may threaten Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s gametime for the Toffees and indeed a place in our 3-man frontlines.
Rumours regarding Manchester City signing Alexis Sanchez have been gaining momentum, and if the move goes through it would have an enormous effect on the fantasy prospects of Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane and even Raheem Sterling! Watch this space for more.
That’ll be all for this week, may your arrows be Green!
