Fantasy Premier League Player Spotlight | Gameweek 19: Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil

Winter is here and so is the Premier League’s festive period which will see 4 gameweeks being played in the next 12 days. Squad rotations by Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp have given FPL managers quite a few headaches in the previous few weeks, so this time we put the spotlight on a midfielder who is largely safe from the risk of rotation – Mesut Ozil.

Mesut Ozil hasn’t had a good season up until now and has largely been in the news regarding his contract situation and potential transfer destinations. However, the German wizard has finally started to show some flashes of the Ozil of 2 years back and this might indicate a change in fortunes as the 2nd half of the season approaches. With Aaron Ramsey out with injury and Alexis Sanchez playing like a player who just wants to run out his contract, the onus has fallen on Ozil to be the main man going forward and the German will be full of confidence after his superb finish against Newcastle last week.

6 of Arsenal’s next 8 fixtures rank just 2 on the FDR and Ozil shouldn’t have much problem in carving open Liverpool’s erroneous defence this weekend. Despite having an average season up until now, Ozil ranks 2nd in the creativity index and is giving almost 4 key passes every game.

Before FPL managers go ballistic saying that Ozil is not value for money and Liverpool and City midfielders offer more points at a cheaper price, I would say that although that might be true, but for those looking to take a punt, Ozil offers a great differential with a selected %age of just 2.5%, is the safest bet when it comes to rotation, and his performances indicate he that he is more than likely to be value for money in the upcoming fixtures.

We might see the 2015-16 Ozil again, the season in which he gave 19 assists to equal the PL record and ended with a whopping 200 points. I am not saying that Ozil can reach that total again, but he might be entering into a purple patch which can make him value for money and a great differential option in the coming weeks.
