This was one of the shattering moments when in Navratilova’s campaign as she aimed to equal her friend, Evert’s record at the US Open.
Meanwhile Austin was coming off from a break after suffering sciatic nerve injuries and last won the title in 1979. She started of succumbing to her contrary’s witty play, going down 1-6 in the very first set. But soon she followed up win some great plays to outclass Martina in a 2nd set tie breaker. YEAR – 1995
OPPONENTS – STEFFI GRAF BEAT MONICA SELES
RESULT – 7-6 (6), 0-6, 6-3
This is dubbed as one of the most enticing matches of Open Era. The match had wielded a question of Graf’s career being one of the best of the Open Era, “If Monica Seles had not been stabbed in 1993, how would her career have unfolded alongside Steffi Graf’s own journey?”
Monica Seles had experienced a horrific incident on her homeland in 1993 when she was stabbed and left traumatised by an unknown person. She was forced to play under par for the remainder of the 90s. Though she managed to get back on her feet once in a while with this 1995 final being one of those few occasions.
She started off dully after letting Graf record a first set victory in a tie-breaker but Seles came on to make her presence felt in the very next set, defeating Graf 0 games to 6 in the 2nd set. Had Seles won the match, it would have been a big question mark on Graf’s career.
Graf’s journey wasn’t an easy-to-go one as she faced numerous challenges on her way, speciall this 1995 challenge from the German which Graf handled with her professionalism and reached to newer heights.

YEAR – 2001
RESULT – 6-2, 6-4
Any match seems to be one of the most gripping as soon as the name of Williams sisters pops up. Now think off a match where the two sisters go head to head against each other. The 2001 US Open final represented the very first final where the Williams sisters went head-to-head against each other as well as the first all sister final to be played at the US Open.
The Harlem Gospel Choir performed with Grucci providing the fireworks, and Diana Ross singing ‘God Bless America’ and then what followed was a match of pure class. The match was so powerful and intriguing in itself that the a record breaking corwd gathered to watch the sisters play. Additionally, the match being played on the US trufs meant a record views on television of almost 23 million.
Venus won the match with a straight set triumph over Serena with a 6-2 6-4 win. With almost 31 unforced errors, Serena saw her racket blown off her hand when Venus served a 109mph serve. The match was one of the best and popular US Open matches till date
“I make sure she has everything, even if I don’t have anything. I love her, and it’s hard.” said Venus after improing her record to 5-2 against Serena.

YEAR – 2012
OPPONENTS – SERENA WILLIAMS BEAT VICTORIA AZARENKA
RESULT – 6-2, 2-6, 7-5
The Williams sisters have their own place in the hisotry of tennis Majors. Though this match could be termed as a return of the Serena that she used to be whilst conquering the WTA Tour in 2002 and 2003.
Serena was coming in the tournament with a dearth of US Open title wins in the past few years. From 2009 to 2001, she had failed to unleash her very best at the Championships. Though the 2012 win was something different for the former pro. She took off well with a 6-2 win in the first set though found some resistance from the other end for the next 2 sets. Still the American never seemed to give in and emerged triumphant over the Belarusian in a 3 set thriller to clinch the US Open title after a long seperation.
With that win she affirmed her place as a pro and started to unleash her very best from then on.

YEAR – 2016
RESULT – 6-3, 4-6, 6-4
The match is being dubbed to be one of the greatest finals ever played in the Open Era. It was the 2nd seed, Angelique Kerber taking on the 10th seed, Czech Republic native, Karolina Pliskova for the US Open 2016 title.
Kerber had proved herself to be a menace throughout the year with her title winning performances and she stood out to be a menace yet again as she forced the 6’1″ Czech to stumble upon her errors to ultimately gift the German a deserved title win. Kerber who is one of the best baseline player, dictated the first set play from the very beginning as Pliskova headed for an awful start with capitulating a first-game break behind a double fault and two easy misses.
But soon the 25 year old recovered well to turn the tide in her favour with a 2nd set turnover, winning it 4-6. The deciding set was a thrilling one as the game started off with balanced performances from both the ends taking the toll to 3-3. The end was imminent as Pliskova was looking nervous and kerber confident at the same time.
Kerber broke the Czech in a love game , falling on her knees with delight as she won the US Open title and cemented her place as a pro on WTA charts.
Tennis highlights of the finals US Open match between German star Angelique Kerber and Czech rising star Karolina Pliskova! Kerber is the first player other than Serena since 2007 to win more than one slam in a season. It will be interesting to see which players can rise to challenge her as Serena’s long illustrious career winds down.
