Fantasy Premier League has introduced the FPL Draft this season and managers are really excited about how this new feature will pan out. If you’re feeling left out in all those FPL Draft conversations, you’re at the right place.
As per the official FPL website, “FPL Draft is free to play and will complement the regular game. You can take on your friends in private leagues made up of 2-16 managers or enter public leagues with strangers of up to eight managers. Your squad must be made up of 15 players, consisting of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. Each Premier League player can only be in one league squad. A draft will take place with managers taking it in turns to make their player selections.”
1. Keep only 8-10 teams per league
The maximum number of teams which can participate in an FPL Draft League is 16. However, ideally, the administrator should keep the number close to 8-10 only as recommended by the makers of the game themselves. The reason for this is that it takes almost 2 hours to complete the draft when there are 16 teams and also because all the players you want would most probably be snapped by other players by the time you get your chance, and in the end, no one is quite satisfied with their teams.
2. Make a Watchlist
This is absolutely necessary as during the draft you’ll just get 90 seconds to make your choice. It might appear a lot on paper right now, but going into the draft without a watchlist, you will be struggling to make the best decision for your squad. If possible, also prioritise the players on your watchlist so that as soon as you see an opportunity to can take an advantage.

3. Not the end of the world if you got the last pick in the draft
Yes, you might miss out on the likes of Harry Kane, Lukaku, Sergio Aguero and Lacazette but remember 24 hours before the Premier League starts, and all the new signings (like Morata, Robertson etc.) would be available for selection, the person who got the last chance during the draft will get the first approval on his waiver request.
But what is a waiver request? Keep reading.
4. Understanding transfers in FPL Draft- waivers and free agents
No direct transfers between managers are allowed in the draft. Once the draft is completed, there are two ways make changes to your squad- submitting a waiver request or a direct transfer from the pool of free agents.
24 hours before each gameweek’s deadline, waiver requests are processed. Similar to the draft process, a waiver ensures all managers get the chance to pick up new signings by clubs or players released by other managers and swap them for a player in the same position in the manager’s own draft. You can make any number of waiver requests, however, you’ll need to prioritise them. During the season, the last ranked team in the league will get the first waiver choice. However, before gameweek 1, the waiver order will be the reverse of the draft order. After the first waiver choices are processed, the order gets reversed.
FPLdraft is LIVE. Here’s what you need to know: https://t.co/GuPI38yZ4t
For example, I got the last chance in my FPL Draft. I want Chelsea’s Morata for Bournemouth’s Afobe (First Priority) and Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson for Brighton’s Dunk.
So, as the first waiver choice is mine I get Morata. And the waiver requests of the other clubs are then processed. However, for the second round of waivers, the order gets reversed and hence my waiver request will be processed the last hence I might miss out on Robertson if some other manager also wanted him.
After all the waiver requests are processed, free agency mode will be activated 24 hours before the Gameweek’s deadline till the deadline. In this mode, you can directly choose any player you want, which is not selected by any other team in your draft league.
We hope your FPL Draft concepts are clearer than before, Happy FPLing!
