Bharat Arun appointed India’s bowling coach; Sanjay Bangar elevated as Shastri’s assistant

Ravi Shastri speaks

The Committee of Administrators (CoA), on the recommendations of the three-member committee which included BCCI’s acting president CK Khanna, has decided to elevate Sanjay Bangar to the position of assistant coach. The Committee has also retained the services of fielding coach R Sridhar while Bharat Arun has been appointed as the bowling coach of the Indian National Cricket team. The Indian team has not had a bowling coach since Arun’s contract expired last year.

Ravi Shastri had a meeting with the Committee in Mumbai today to reach a consensus on the support staff of the team and the announcement was made thereafter. The Chairman of CoA Vinod Rai made the appointments official after the decision by the three member committee. In addition to all these appointments, Patrick Farhart will continue as the Physio of the team and Shankar Basu as the fitness trainer.

The contracts of all these appointments begin with immediate effect and will continue till the 2019 World Cup. The BCCI had earlier announced Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as batting consultant and bowling coach respectively. However, after this decision, speculation was rife that Shastri wanted his own core team to be on board and that he wanted Zaheer as only a consultant.

BCCI has appointed Sanjay Bangar as the assistant coach and Bharat Arun as the bowling coach till next World Cup.

After today’s appointments, BCCI has cleared the air around the support staff but the confusion around Dravid and Zaheer continues. Shastri spoke about this and said, “I’ve spoken to both, as recent as three to four days ago and they are two fantastic cricketers of India. Their inputs will be invaluable. They will be on board once they have spoken to the authorities concerned”.

Now that Shastri has had his say and his own core team, results are expected from him. The first tour for him is soon going to start with India soon leaving for Srilanka for a long tour including 3 tests, 5 ODIs and a one off T20 match.
