The franchisee owners of the South Africa Global T20 League have been revealed and there have been a host of foreigners among the owners, including Shah Rukh Khan who has brought the Newlands franchise which will be known as Cape Town Knight Riders.
Among the eight owners, only two are South Africans in the form of Mustaq Brey and Osman Osman, taking Stellenbosch and Pretoria franchise’s respectively. The other owners include GMR group, which also owns IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils and Sushil Kumar, a Hong Kong based businessman whose bid for Bloemfontein has been successful.
“Competition was stiff, with more than 150 Expressions of Interest (EOI) received from around the world and a shortlist of heavy hitters to consider, but after rigorous discussions and engagement with each of the potential owners, we are certain that our final eight owners have the perfect combination of strategic insight and passion needed to make the first T20 Global League a complete success,” said CSA President, Chris Nenzani, after the owners were unveiled.
While the amounts of the winning bids are yet to be disclosed, the amount is expected to be quite high given the kind of interest generated by the league. The unveiling was attended by some of the key international players as well as some representative of the owners.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ CEO Venky Mysore, who is a regular at the IPL auctions, described this step as a part of the franchise’s global initiative. “This initiative is part of our global plans, from Kolkata to Trinidad and now Cape Town,” he said.
He also expressed his happiness on the availability of JP Duminy as the marquee player for the franchise. “Great to have JP Duminy but there is no guarantee that he will play for us in IPL next year. The dynamics of every league is different,” Mysore said.
Duminy expressed his joy on being a part of the Bollywood star’s team. “It’s great to be in Shah Rukh’s team. He is a global super-star and I will be happy to see him signing more autographs than I will do,” said the Proteas all-rounder jokingly.
Though the tournament has gained a lot of positive attention, it remains to be seen whether it will be able to challenge IPL and Big Bash.
