The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 has now reached its business end with the first semi-final set to be staged between England and Pakistan on 14 June in Cardiff. The names in the final four in this year’s edition of the tournament have shunted many predictions (before the event) which didn’t even give a chance to the likes of Pakistan and Bangladesh making it to the final four.
England are in red-hot form as is evident by the fact that they are the only undefeated team in the tournament. The manner in which they counter-punched an able Australian pace attack after being three-down speaks volumes of the brand of cricket they are playing at the moment. On the other hand, Pakistan have done remarkably well to make it to the final four Stage after being decimated by India in the opening game. Their wins against South Africa and Sri Lanka displayed their grit to succeed. They have a potent bowling attack which has the ability to reign-in the English juggernaut.
So far, there has been a total of 84 ODI encounters between the two teams of which, England has reigned supreme in 52 contests while Pakistan came good in 30 of those while 2 can’t muster any result. It is interesting to note that the two teams haven’t met yet for a Champions Trophy clash. The last ODI encounter between the two teams was in September 2016 which was the fifth and the last match of the five-match bilateral ODI series which Pakistan won by 4 wickets when they chased down a score of 302 with superb efforts from Sarfraz Ahmed (90) and Shoaib Malik (77). England won the five-match series by a 4-1 margin.
