ICC Champions Trophy: England vs Australia – Key Players

England vs Australia: Key Players

Hosts England have sealed a semi-final spot after seeing off New Zealand in their last encounter. The last league match of Group A sees England vs Australia in what is a must win match for the Aussies.

England have been in great form throughout the tournament as they are the only team to have won all the matches till now with 4 points on the board. They defeated Bangladesh by 8 wickets in the first match and then New Zealand by 87 runs in the next match. They seem to be the most balanced side in the tournament as their combinations are yielding great results for them making them a strong contender of the trophy.

On the other hand, Australia has been pretty unlucky in the tournament as both of their games were washed out by the rain forcing them to split points on both the occasions, leaving them with only 2 points in 2 games. In the last match against Bangladesh, they nearly missed out as they needed to play for 4 overs more for the Duckworth Lewis to be applicable. But the rain did not allow the play to be resumed after 16 overs and the Umpires decided to call off the match.

The hosts have already qualified for the semi-final and Australia would need to register a really big win to boost their net run rate which would bolster their chances of qualifying for the semis. Let’s take a look at the key players to watch out for in this match:-

Key Batsman: JOE ROOT

Joe Root is one of the best batsmen in the world across all formats.  The England batsman has been in fine form and is currently the second highest scorer in the Champions Trophy with 197 runs, just behind Tamim Iqbal. He hit his 10th ODI century in the match against Bangladesh and ended up with an unbeaten 133, helping his side chase a target of 306 with 2 overs to spare.

He followed that up with a score of 64 against New Zealand and sealing the semis spot for the hosts. He will be the key batsman in the upcoming clash between England and Australia.

Plunkett is the leading wicket taker in the Champions Trophy till now with 8 wickets in 2 matches courtesy his two 4-wicket spells. He has been economical too with the economy rate just under 6 which is pretty good as he has chipped away wickets at crucial moments.

KEY ALL-ROUNDER: Glenn Maxwell

The Aussies have been unlucky with the rain pouring in both their matches and they haven’t gotten a chance to perform till now. This will be a crucial match for them and Glenn Maxwell will be the key all rounder to watch out for. He is an explosive batsman and can also pick wickets with his off break bowling, making him a great asset to the Aussies. In a must win match against England, he will be eager to go all guns blazing and hope to qualify for the semis.
