Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon – Best Wins

Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon

The Spanish juggernaut Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon has been quite a success and has piled up some era defining victories over the years. Nadal was the person, who scaled insurmountable odds and brought to an end, Roger Federer‘s overwhelming dominance especially on grass, at this very tournament in 2008. That was the beginning of another era, an era of overhauling a number of records and creating new ones. So here we look at 5 of those victories, that were a testimony to Nadal’s annexation of the “grass territory”.

  1. 2008 Wimbledon Final vs Roger Federer

This is arguably the best match ever played at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, between the then all conquering Federer, and his long time understudy Nadal. The victory is not only significant because of the quality of tennis showcased by the two men, but also because of the setting of the game. Federer almost decimated every opposition and marched to grand slams after grand slams like it was a cake walk.

The then five time defending champion Federer, was held for a staggering 4 hours and 48 minutes by an iron-willed Nadal and after five of the most epic sets in Men’s tennis history, Nadal broke into tears of joy at the grass-turned-dirt. Nadal won 2–6, 6–7 (4), 7–6 (5), 6–3, 6–1. That day, Federer passed the baton with the No.1 ranking to a 22 year old clay maestro.

2. 2010 Wimbledon 3rd Round vs Philipp Petzschner

The 2010 Wimbledon wasn’t as dominated by the World No.1 Nadal as it was expected from him and he had to survive an early scare in the form of World No.33 Petzschner. The victory is great because Nadal had to overcome excruciating pain in the knee and elbow, and was pushed to the limits in this five setter.

Petzschner’s advantages could be counted on the fingers, yet it was his determination that almost brought the defending champion on his knees. Nadal prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3 that day.

3. 2014 Wimbledon 2nd Round vs Lukas Rosol

This victory was claimed to be special by the then World No.1 Nadal himself and was his redemption for the loss in the 2012 Wimbledon against the same opposition at the same stage. In 2012, his defeat against Rosol brought about an avalanche of setbacks for the Spaniard. Nadal played his best tennis on grass for a long time in this match.

Yet again, Nadal came back from a set down to clinch the victory by 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. It was a cyclonic start by Rosol and he threatened to drub Nadal, but unfortunately lost the grip on the match with poor serves, weak shots and unforced errors in the third and fourth set.

4. 2011 Wimbledon Semi Final vs Andy Murray

Nadal ended Murray’s hopes for an elusive Wimbledon title for a second straight year, once again coming from behind. This was Nadal’s 20th straight victory in Wimbledon.. Though Murray was iniitially troubled by a lingering hip injury, he recovered well and wrapped up the first set as Nadal drove his forehand into the net.

Murray was surely in the driver’s seat after the first set, but Nadal had other ideas. He threatened Murray’s serve twice early on in the second set and then finally broke. Then there was no looking back as Nadal won the match 5-7 6-2 6-2 6-4.

5. 2010 Wimbledon Final vs Tomas Berdych

This may not be the most competitive match, but this victory gave Rafa his second and last Wimbledon title till now. The match was a highly anticipated one as Berdych achieved two shock defeats against Federer and Novak Djokovic en route to the Final.

But he never looked like causing an upset against Nadal, as the Spaniard ramped up his game after the Semi Final against Murray. Nadal took control of the proceedings in emphatic fashion and stamped his authority on the match with a comfortable first set win. Nadal eventually won in straight sets 6-3,7-5,6-4.
