ICC Champions Trophy: New Zealand vs Bangladesh – Probable XI

Williamson bowls to Mossadek

Qualification for the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy from Group A has become intense with table toppers England being the only team to qualify for the semifinals, leaving behind Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand with 2,1,1 points each.

New Zealand will take on Bangladesh in the 9th match of the tournament at Cardiff on Friday. The two teams are currently at position 3 and 4 and sharing a point each.

A win on Friday will upgrade them to 2nd position on the points table and then they would have to depend on England to beat the Australian side so that they can qualify for semifinals. Both the teams were beaten by the hosts and had to share a point with Australia respectively as their matches were washed away by rain.

New Zealand’s first match against Australia was abandoned due to rain and then they were beaten by 87 runs in their last game against England. Hence they desperately need a win in their final game of the group to keep their hopes alive for the semifinals. Skipper Kane Williamson has been impressive with the bat and has managed to score 187 runs in 2 games played so far including a ton against Australia and would be carrying the major part of the responsibility on his shoulder. Although the team couldn’t manage to win any of the matches, they would be hoping to break the jinx in the next game.

Tamim Iqbal in action

Bangladesh had a poor start of the tournament as they were beaten by the host by 8 wickets in the opening game of the tournament. Their next game against Australia was abandoned due to rain. A win against New Zealand will put them at 2nd spot in the table. So far, opener Tamim Iqbal has been very impressive with the bat and scored 128 and 95 runs in the two games played so far. Again the Bangla Tigers will be hoping for a good start from Iqbal.
