WWE Extreme Rules-Best and Worst Segments

WWE Extreme Rules

As the one night of the year, when WWE goes Extreme, this year’s WWE Extreme Rules actually had some very tame stipulations to matches. The only real extreme matches were the five man extreme rules match, the steel cage tag match and the kendo stick on a pole match. Even the kendo stick on a pole match seems like a joke. However despite the contradiction, the pay-per-view had some amazing moments.

We will be rating each segment from -5 to +5.

  1. The Miz vs Dean Ambrose [c] [WWE Intercontinental Title] [If Dean is disqualified, Miz gets the Title]: +3

The entire match was set up to create an air of tension, as it looked like Dean could get disqualified any minute and lose the title due to the stipulations. Time and time again he came within inches of losing control enough to attack Miz with reckless  abandon, and it looked like he might be disqualified.

There were plenty of near finishes, as both the men came close to hitting their finishers, but never quite getting there. Miz tried to be disqualified, by getting Maryse to slap him, but the referee ejected her instead. Finally Miz took advantage of the distracted referee when Ambrose ran into him, to hit Dean with a Skull Crushing Finale for the win, and became a seven time Intercontinental Champion.

  1. Noam Dar and Alicia Fox vs Rich Swann and Sasha Banks [Mixed Tag Match]: +2

This was the first match, where stars from the Cruiserweight Division and the Main division were involved together. It might be taken as a sign of better things to come.

The match itself however was nothing out of the ordinary. It had a predictable finish with Banks and Swann picking up the win. Swann hit Dar with a Double Knee followed by a Phoenix Splash to get the pin for this contest.

  1. Bayley vs Alexa Bliss [WWE Raw Women’s Title] [Kendo Stick on a Pole Match]: -4

The match threatened to be the silliest one of the night. It was, and not only that, it was the worst match of the night. Bayley in the main roster has been booked terribly. Alexa is amazing at selling, but it was not enough to help this match be a credible thing.

Alexa won the match after beating Bayley up with a Kendo Stick, and giving her a DDT. There was literally nothing interesting that happened. The Raw Women’s Title deserves to be booked better than this.

  1. The Hardy Boyz vs Sheamus and Cesaro [WWE Raw Tag Team Titles] [Steel Cage Match]: +3

This was the best match of the night in some ways. It started off with a crowd dead from the last match, but halfway through, the match woke the crowd up.

With the stipulations saying that the only way to win is for both members of the team to escape from the cage, the match was really exciting. Sheamus and Cesaro have brilliant chemistry with the Hardy Boyz and it showed in the match. Jeff escaped first, but Matt was left in the ring. There were amazing spots with a Double Team White Noise from the top rope, as well as a Whisper in the Wind from the top of the cage by Jeff. Both the teams almost escaped at the same time, but Cesaro and Sheamus escaped first, winning the titles by a hair.

  1. Neville vs Austin Aries [WWE Cruiserweight Title] [Submission Match]: +2

The contradictory nature of the match, where two high fliers are put in a type of match, where the offence is grounded hurt the match. The match was a good one however, as both the worker put in their all for it. The Sunset Flip Powerbomb by Aries was a highlight of the night.

Neville won eventually with a Rings of Saturn.

  1. Roman Reigns vs Finn Balor vs Bray Wyatt vs Seth Rollins vs Samoa Joe [Winner will face Lesnar for Universal Title]: +4

This match was a surprise. It was way better than expected, everyone put in their all. Wyatt and Joe got a partnership going, while Balor looked really good and dominating. The two dominated for a large part of the match picking off the other stars individually. They used chairs as well as the steps to take out everyone. The turning point came when Rollins got hit with an amazing Sister Abigail by Wyatt, but Joe broke up the pin. The two then went at each other. Reigns puts them both through the barricade with a spear, while Rollins hits Wyatt with a Frog splash through the table.

Balor took out Reigns and Rollins, but then got caught in the Coquina Clutch of Joe, and the referee called the match. Joe picked up the win and will face Lesnar for the title.

The pay-per-view was an amazing one actually with plenty of things happening. The Women’s title match took away from the show, but overall Extreme Rules fared well with a +10 rating.
