World No.1 Angelique Kerber faltered in the very first test as she lost 6-2,6-2 to the Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Kerber was one of the contenders for the French Open in absence of Serena Williams. Kerber’s poor form continued in this match as well, resulting in an embarrasing exit in the first round itself.
Makarova dictated the match from the first set itself. With her powerful serve and fierce shots, Makarova pushed Kerber to the base line and to lead 5-1 in no time. Kerber was broken in the very first game as she struggled to find form against a relentless Makarova. The Russian again broke Kerber in the 5th game and then with another break, went on to clinch the first set 6-2 in 32 minutes. Makarova smacked 10 winners to Kerber’s 4.
Makarova continued where she left off in the first set. Makarova broke Kerber in the 2nd game and lead 3-0 when Kerber broke back. She was starting to come back in form saving 2 break points on her serve but eventually Makarova pursued and got the break. Kerber was more persistent in this set and broke back immediately. But Makarova was stubborn and again broke Kerber. She then saved 7 break points as she served for the match and there it was game, set, match for Makarova.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Kerber as she committed 24 unforced errors while Makarova piled up 24 winners. But after 1 hour and 16 minutes Kerber became the first world no.1 to get ousted in the opening round at Roland Garros in the Open era.
