Monaco and their Ligue 1 title in numbers!

Monaco players celebrating after a win

Monaco player Jao MoutinhoMonaco have finally done it. Leonardo Jardim’s men have finally pipped heavyweights and close rivals Paris Saint Germain to the Ligue 1 title. This is Monaco’s first title in 17 long years.

Monaco defeated Saint Etienne 2-0 to win the title with a game remaining. Monaco finished a whooping 31 points behind PSG last season in 3rd place, and their lack of goals was a concern, but Jardim addressed the issue and Monaco have scored a staggering 104 goals this season, while conceding only 29. They also did fantastically well in the Champions League, reaching the semi finals and winning hearts all the way.

How it all began :

As Monaco started off their season with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Guingamp Fc. Fabinho and Bernardo Silva scored the goals for the now French Champions. The result wasn’t the ideal one to start the season for Monaco, who were favourites prior to the match.

Their first league win of the season came on 20th Aug, a 1-0 win against Nantes Fc. That win kickstarted a dream campaign for Monaco.

The win against PSG :

Monaco played PSG in their next game, and PSG were naturally firm favourites to win the game. But Monaco did the unthinkable and defeated PSG by 3-1. Goals from Moutinho, Bakayoko and a Serge Aurier own goal sealed all three points for Monaco.

The win against PSG was followed by two brilliant results – against Lille and Rennes.

Balotelli sinks Jardim’s men :

Riding high on their sublime form, Monaco faced Nice in their next game. But their joy turned into despair when a Mario Balotelli brace led Nice to a 4-1 victory.

Bakayoko was sent off in the 83rd minute, adding salt to Monaco wounds.

Kylian Mbappe celebrates after scoringThe Rise of Kylian Mbappe:

The highlight of the season for Monaco was star striker Kylian Mbappe. The 18 year old has taken world football by a storm, and already has a better record than Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age.Mbappe has scored 26 goals and provided 16 assists so far this season, and is tipped to be one of the best players in the world in the future.

The French wonderkid has been the major reason why Monaco have pipped PSG to the title. Mbappe scored his first league hat trick in the 7-0 rout of Metz, and was instrumental in knocking Manchester City out of the competition. Monaco have vowed to keep him at the club, but with clubs like Real Madrid and PSG tracking him, it is difficult.
