May is turning out to be a merry month for the Indian Women Cricket Team with the 19-year old Deepti Sharma and Poonam Raut along with Jhulan Goswami being on record breaking runs. Last week it was Jhulan, who made it to the record books by leaving behind former Australian pacewoman, Cathryn Fitzpatrick, to become the highest wicket taker in ODIs as she scalped her 181st wicket. Now, It’s the opening duo of Deepti Sharma and Poonam Raut that has shattered the record books with their 320-run stand against Ireland in the ongoing quadrangular series in South Africa.
Deepti narrowly missed out on a well-deserved double ton as she got out for a 160-ball 188 which included 27 fours and 2 sixes. This is the second highest score by a woman cricketer just behind Australian, Belinda Clark’s 229-run effort against Denmark back in 1997. Poonam, too, got to her hundred as she scored 109 off 116 deliveries before retiring hurt. Her knock included 11 hits to the fence.
The 320-run stand between the two is the highest opening partnership ever in both men’s and women’s cricket. Riding on the duo’s herculean effort, India posted a mammoth 358 on the board and then put up a bowling master-class to skittle Ireland out for a paltry 109, pocketing the match by a huge 249-run margin.
Twitter also expressed its happiness over the amazing display of Indian Women Power-
