Everyone on the ATP Tour besides Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been struggling this season and World No.3 Stan Wawrinka is no exception. After early exits at Monte Carlo and Madrid, Wawrinka is determined to make mends at the Rome Open. Wawrinka arrived early in Rome along with a host of other stars, trying to contain the derailment. The 2015 French Open champion has been sub-standard on clay this season.
The Swiss No.1 said,” Of course I was disappointed after getting eliminated in the first round in Madrid, but I am feeling good now. I have been practicing here, in Rome, since my loss so I am not low on confidence, because I feel it is important to hone your skills and the results will come.”
Wawrinka knows that Rome is the last stop before Roland Garros and spoke about the pressure going into the only Grand Slam on clay, “For tournaments like the French Open, the pressure is always there. Even if you are playing good every week, one bad day and you are out. So, it is not that simple.”
The Swiss reiterated Novak Djokovic‘s claim about Nadal being the favourite for the French Open and said,”He has been playing well this season. Making it to the finals at Miami and at Melbourne, and winning consecutive titles on clay. He is certainly a favourite for French Open.”
He also commented on Federer’s strategy to leave tournaments on clay, “The best thing about Federer is that he knows himself very well. He always takes the right decision for himself. Being out for six months and winning a handful of titles after coming back, he certainly knows what he is doing.”
