THE HISTORY OF PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE SEASON AWARD

Started in the 1994/95 season, the honour is given to the player who has been a consistent performer throughout the course of the campaign. The winner is determined by the combination of fan votes and a panel of football experts. Former England striker Alan Shearer was the inaugural recipient of the award. This will be the 23rd season of the annual prize bestowed by the Premier League.

HOW MANY PLAYERS HAVE WON IT?

A total of 19 players have received the honour to date. 16 of them have won it once while the remaining three got the award twice and hence, are the record winners of the prize. They are Thierry Henry (2004, 2006), Cristiano Ronaldo (2007, 2008) and Nemanja Vidic (2009, 2011).

Of the previous 22 Premier League Player of the season awards, a staggering 14 of them have been won by players whose side ended up with the league title the same season. Eden Hazard, one of the nominees this year, received the honour in 2015 when Chelsea went on to lift their 4th Premier League title under now Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

WHICH CLUB HAS RECEIVED THE MOST PLAYER OF THE SEASON AWARDS?

Manchester United have been the most successful club in this regard with six of its players receiving this award on 8 separate occasions (1996, 1999, 2003, 2007-2011). They are followed by Arsenal with 4 of them (2001, 2002, 2004, 2006). Liverpool (1998, 2014) and Chelsea (2005, 2015) are tied-third with 2 awards each.

WHO LOOKS LIKELY TO WIN THE AWARD?

With Chelsea having recently won the league title and well on course for a double, the winner is likely to be a Blues’ player. N’golo Kante already has an individual treble in his bag having received the Player of the year honours from the PFA, FWA and London football awards. The midfield dynamo should dethrone the current holder Jamie Vardy and become the third French recipient of the individual accolade after Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry.
