The La Liga weekend saw a number of interesting results where the two big guns, Real Madrid and Barcelona, continued their winning form. Both the arch rivals defeated their respective opponents 4-1 and kept their hopes of winning the title alive. Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals and made sure Madrid passed their biggest remaining test against Sevilla.
Real Madrid now have two games remaining, against Malaga and Celta Vigo, and look to be on course to winning their first La Liga title in 5 years. Barcelona, on the other hand, kept the pressure on their arch-rivals as they made light work of Las Palmas. Neymar scored a brilliant hat trick and also provided an assist as the Catalans kept their hopes of winning the title alive.
Here are the other results:
Alaves 3-1 Celta Vigo
Athletic Club 1-1 Leganes
Eibar 0-1 Sporting Gijon
Real Betis 1-1 Atletico Madrid
Real Sociedad 2-2 Malaga
Villareal 0-0 Deportivo
Espanyol 0-1 Valencia
Osasuna 2-1 Granada
Here we look at the major things we learned from the La Liga weekend:
1)Real Madrid and Ronaldo just keep on scoring:
The Los Blancos have not won the La Liga title for 5 years but looked destined to win it this year, as they are level with Barcelona at the top of the table, having played a game less. The game at Sevilla was expected to be a tough one for Zinedine Zidane’s men, but they came out with flying colours, as Ronaldo scored a brace, and Nacho and Toni Kroos added two more.
Real Madrid have now scored for 62 consecutive games, and that is an astonishing record, considering they have also fielded a weakened eleven in recent weeks. Cristiano Ronaldo was once again the star of the show, scoring a brilliant brace and easing the nerves of the Bernabeu faithful. The Portuguese superstar also scored his 400th goal for Real Madrid, at an average of more than a goal per game. Real Madrid might be a little vulnerable at the back but are sensational going forward, considering they have scored in 62 on the trot. They would be hoping that they maintain their form in the remaining games and seal the title.
2) Neymar has found his shooting boots:
The Brazilian superstar has arguably had his best season for Barcelona but has often been criticized for his lack of goals this season. But the former Santos player answered his critics in fine style as he scored a brilliant hat-trick against Las Palmas to keep his side in the hunt for the title. Neymar has only scored 13 goals this season in the La Liga, but has had a major impact on a lot of games, and has established himself as one of the best players in the world. With Barcelona requiring a win to keep the pressure on Real Madrid, the Brazilian delivered as he notched up a well-deserved hat trick. With age by his side, it is frightening to imagine what Neymar can achieve in the future.
3) Atletico Madrid scrappy and need to improve next season:
Atletico Madrid faced yet another heartbreak at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League and looked hungover from their second leg game against their city rivals. Atletico have not had a particularly great season and never looked like challenging Real Madrid or Barcelona in the title race. Here as well, Diego Simeone’s men were poor from the outset, as they went behind when Dani Ceballos scored a thunderbolt. But Stefan Savic spared their blushes as he somehow managed to equalise for his team. Atletico are a brilliant football team, but they need to improve immensely next season to challenge for the La Liga and Champions League.
