Djokovic’s disappointing season just got more frustrating, as he was forced to exit the Madrid Open semi-finals by a seemingly invincible Nadal. It was an uncharacteristically one-sided contest to mark the 50th match between these two. It was Nadal’s first win over Djokovic in 3 years, befitting the shift in power this year. The Serb was no match for the all-conquering Spaniard and lost rather easily, 6-2, 6-4.
Djokovic just played his first semi final after the Qatar Open and was dejected after the loss. After the match he said, “It is good to compete with the best players, after a long time, and today Nadal was visibly better. I tried to bring my top game into the match, but my performance wasn’t really of high quality.“
Djokovic even went ahead to claim, “Nadal is the hot favourite for French open, it is his to lose“.
The Spaniard has been in red hot form this season and hasn’t lost yet on clay. Responding to Djokovic’s claim Nadal said, “Obviously it is not a guarantee that I will triumph at Roland Garros, because the game is unpredictable. We will have to see in Paris, who actually lifts the trophy“.
