The iconic Eden Gardens is all set to host its final game of IPL 10 as two of the most successful teams in the history of Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians lock horns with each other in the 54th game of VIVO IPL 10.
KKR vs MI – Overview
Though both the teams will be coming on the back of defeats in their previous games, Mumbai will face less pressure as they have already qualified for the play-offs. Kolkata, on the other hand have lost two of their last three games, which have immensely affected their hopes of a top-two finish. Though a loss may also see SRK’s boys through, Gambhir & Co. will eye nothing less than a win to end among the top couple of teams. Erstwhile, if Mumbai win, they will virtually confirm their position atop the standings, a loss may push them to the 3rd position.
Apart from injuries, both KKR and MI have kept their team intact for majority of the season and are unlikely to make too many changes going in the final game of the league stage. The batting departments are on even kneels, but Mumbai have a more potent bowling attack as compared to Kolkata’s. Though they conceded 230 against KXIP in a bowler’s graveyard at the Wandkede, still the likes of Bumrah and Malinga are better equipped than Rajoot and Umesh.
Overseas players Lynn and Simmons will spearhead the respective batting units and going by the current form, these two will be the prized scalps for opposition bowlers. However, the performance of experienced batsmen like Gambhir and Rohit too will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the game. The toss too will play a pivotal role as both the teams prefer to chase targets.
Top Batsman: Chris Lynn
— Sir Ravindra Jadeja (@SirJadeja) May 9, 2017
With 259 runs from just 4 matches at a strike-rate of 186, Lynnsanity has decimated bowlers on each and every occasion in this IPL. Lynn’s 84 almost single handedly took KKR to the brink of victory against KXIP. His effortless ability of sending the ball way back into the stands is always a constant threat for bowlers. If the Aussie bat gets going against MI’s famed pace attack, it can spell doom for Mumbai.
Top Bolwer: Jasprit Bumrah
In the last match against Punjab, where the rest of Mumbai bowlers conceded runs over ten an over, the ever miserly Bumrah eked out a wonder spell of 1/24 in his four overs. Having both the abilities of stemming the run-rate and scalping wickets, Bumrah’s acute death bowling skills hands Mumbai a X-factor in every game. With 15 wickets from 13 matches, he is MI’s second highest wicket-taker behind McClenaghan.
Top All-Rounder: Hardik Pandya
— hardik pandya (@hardikpandya7) May 8, 2017
With his brother Krunal ruled out to injury and Pollard bowling very few overs, Hardik is now Mumbai’s sole specialist all-rounder who they can rely on. His bowling too has been used on very limited instances, but in batting, he has scored runs at a strike rate of 162. His cameo against Punjab renewed Mumbai’s hopes of a record chase, but Hardik failed to finish the job and eventually his team lost. No doubt, his all round skills will be critical in this crunch encounter.
