FYS stat attack: Records go for a toss as Kings XI Punjab pip Mumbai Indians in a Humdinger!

Records went for a tumble at the Wankhede stadium as the Kings XI Punjab pipped the Mumbai Indians in a cracking match to stay alive in the tournament.

Kings XI Punjab kept their play-off hopes alive by defeating the table-toppers, Mumbai Indians, by a narrow seven-run margin. KXIP, riding on Saha’s unbeaten 93, posted a mammoth 230-3 on the board. MI started off brilliantly with Parthiv and Simmons going all guns blazing but MI lost a slew of wickets mid-way and that proved decisive as Pandya and Pollard’s efforts to swing the match back in favour of MI went down the drain as MI fell 7-runs short of the finishing line.


Here are some numbers from the scintillating contest-

453 runs scored in the match- second highest in IPL history after 469 run match of CSK vs RR in 2010.

230 This is the second highest total against Mumbai- RCB’s 235/1 at Wankhede in 2015 stands the highest. This is also the third highest total for KXIP in IPL – highest being 232/2 against RCB in 2011 while 231/4 against CSK in 2014 stands second best.

223 is the highest total for MI in IPL, albeit in a losing cause. It is also the joint-highest total by any team while chasing along with RR’s 223 vs CSK in 2010.

76 runs scored by MI in last five overs of this chase – second most while chasing. The highest is 80 that too by MI against KXIP in 2015- MI lost that match, too, by 18 runs.

139 runs scored in powerplay by both the teams combined- fourth highest in an IPL game with 170 being the highest coming in CSK vs KXIP eliminator in 2014.

5000 MI’s Lendl Simmons completed his 5000 runs in T20 cricket during his half-century.

2 KXIP’s 230/3 is the second highest score at the Wankhede after RCB’s 235-run effort in 2015. This is also the highest total of IPL 10.

3 Pollard completed his 300 runs this season which is the third such season. On the other two occasions, i.e. 2013 (420 runs) and 2015 (419 runs), Mumbai lifted the trophy.

45 runs conceded by Harbhajan in his three overs -the most by him in an IPL match – previous most was 44 against RCB in 2010. This is also the first time in 11 matches that he has conceded 30 or more runs in a match.

102 balls bowled by Ishant this season without a wicket- most by any bowler in a season eclipsing Karn Sharma’s 98 in 2016.

15 sixes by Hardik Pandya in last five overs this IPL – the most by any batsman. He has also scored the most runs (175) in last five overs this year.

Brief Scores: KXIP 230-3 (Saha 93* and Bumrah 1-24) beat MI 223-6 ( Simmons 59 and Mohit 2-57) by 7 runs.
