Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are set to commence their Mutua Madrid Open campaign today with both of them taking on tricky opponents.
Rafael Nadal Vs Fabio Fognini
A four-time Madrid Open champion, Nadal is set to play Italian Fabio Fognini in a match that was delayed due to Nadal’s ear infection. The World No.5 has been in amazing form, coming to Madrid following victories at Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
“I’m playing really well”, explained the Mallorcan. “Madrid is a very important event for me, on clay and also in a place where people have always helped me enormously. I feel energetic. I am so excited to be back in Madrid. It could be another important week if I do things well.”
Having reached 7 finals and winning 4 of them, Nadal holds the record for the most number of victories at the Mutua Madrid Open.
The two have faced each other 11 times before this with Nadal leading their head-to-head 8-3.
Novak Djokovic Vs Nicolas Almagro
The World No.2 and defending champion comes to Madrid without a coach and faces a seasoned campaigner in Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.
The Serb has not been in impressive form so far this season and would be looking to get some vital confidence going into Roland Garros is two weeks time.
Almagro comes into this match following his three set victory over fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo.
This will be the fifth time the two will square off with Djokovic leading Almagro 4-0 in their head-to-head battles.
