WWE Smackdown aired live tonight and was storied around the upcoming Pay Per View Backlash. Several story lines converged and some of them were solved in the ring.
Here are the highlights from the action –
Jinder Mahal picks up the pieces
Randy Orton addressed the crowd and talked about Jinder Mahal costing him his match at Payback against Bray Wyatt. Mahal came out and revealed new promotional pictures he had taken with the title that he stole from Orton last week.
Kevin Owens interrupted and voiced his pride over ending Chris Jericho’s career, much to the chagrin of the live crowd in England. AJ Styles – Owens’ opponent at Backlash – vowed to take the title away from him. Meanwhile, Baron Corbin made an appearance, but was attacked by Sami Zayn for his actions last week. All six superstars were put in a tag match to settle their differences.
The intensity of the main event was high, with all six superstars looking to prove something ahead of Backlash. Jinder Mahal tried to duck Orton while Sami Zayn showed off his athleticism by taking out all three opponents on the outside.
Midway through the match, AJ Styles and Owens had a great sequence and both men ended up looking for a tag. Orton got the hot tag and finally got his hands of Mahal. Orton proceeded to hit the running powerslam on him and then Corbin.
Owens took a DDT. Zayn took out Mahal again, only to be knocked down by Corbin. Styles and Owens got their moves in, Orton returned with an RKO on Owens. But Mahal hit the Cobra Cluth slam from behind and picked up the win.
Breezdango building momentum
The team of Fandango and Tyler Breeze soundly defeated the Ascension. The win can be attributed to their renewed chemistry and cohesiveness. Breeze was smooth in the ring and showed off his ‘Super Model Kick’ while Fandango finished off the match after his top rope leg drop.
After the match, Tag Champions the Usos cut a promo on them to claim that Breezdango did not have enough time to prepare for their match at Backlash and they would lose to the Usos.
Dolph Ziggler challenges Nakamura
Dolph Ziggler came out and mentioned his accolades throughout his career and demanded the crowd to appreciate him more. But the crowd called for Nakamura instead. Ziggler reminded them that Nakamura was yet to have a match on Smackdown.
Nakamura offered to oblige and they teased a match, but Ziggler backed out. Taking a cheap shot, Ziggler tried to gain the upper hand. Nakamura turned the tables and sent Ziggler outside the ring with a flurry of clean strikes.
