Maria Sharapova Vs Eugenie Bouchard face off against each other in the Second Round of the Mutua Madrid Open in one of the most awaited matches of the day.
Two weeks after calling the Russian a “cheater” who should be banned from professional tennis, the Canadian is set to cross paths with the former World No.1.
“I don’t think that’s right,” Bouchard had said. “She is a cheater and so, to me, I don’t think a cheater in any sport should be allowed to play that sport again. It’s so unfair to all the other players who do it the right way.”
Sharapova responded to that by saying, “It’s not the way I go about my job. I’ve been in the public eye since I was a very young girl. I’ve heard a lot of things. If everything affects you on and off the court, I think that would be a really challenging position to be in. It’s not the way I think. My tennis speaks for itself, and that’s what I focus on.”
Sharapova, a former champion in Madrid (2014), expects a difficult match against the player, who once regarded her as her idol. “I don’t think that’s right and definitely not someone I can say I look up to anymore,” Bouchard said.
The two players have played 4 times before with the Russian winning all four of their previous encounters. Their last meeting came at the 2015 Australian Open with Sharapova outclassing the Canadian in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
