The race for the La Liga title is intensifying. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are giving their all in order to win the title. Barcelona look to be back to their best, courtesy of their attacking trio – MSN – and are chasing Madrid all the way till the end. Barcelona have won the title for two straight years now and looking to complete a hattrick of La Liga titles. Real, on the other hand, have been extremely successful in the Champions League, but somehow haven’t managed to win the La Liga title since 2012. That even prompted Barcelona manager Luis Enrique to take a subtle dig at the club. But this year Madrid look poised to win the title. And that is because of their squad depth. Madrid have the best squad in the league and their fringe players have impressed immensely when given the chance. Real Madrid’s B team features players like Alvaro Morata, James Rodriguez and Isco, who would make it to the eleven of almost any side in the world, but such is the strength of Madrid’s squad that even they can only manage to make it to the bench.
Great first half and good win away from home ??@realmadrid #halamadrid
Barcelona piled the pressure on Real Madrid after they thrashed Villarreal 4-1 with all members of the MSN getting on the scoresheet. The equation for Barca is simple – win all your games and hope Madrid falter in just one of their games. Barcelona hoped that Granada would somehow pull off an upset against the Madrid giants, however optimistic that might seem given Granada’s form this season. But when the team sheets were released, the hopes would have intensified. Zinedine Zidane had again opted for his second string side. And however talented the players were, they were fringe players. Barcelona had hope, but the fringe players had belief. Barcelona’s hopes started fading when James scored in the 2nd minute. He added another and Alvaro Morata scored the third.
The major difference between the two teams this season has been their squad depth. Barcelona called upon Jordi Alba, Javier Mascherano and Andre Gomes from the bench against Villarreal and that does not paint a pretty picture. The Catalans have been too dependent on their attacking trio this season, and have faltered when they haven’t fired. Madrid, on the other hand, have players like Asensio, James and Morata to call upon from the bench, all players Barcelona would so dearly love to have. Yes, Barcelona do have the best attacking trident in the world. But three players do not win you titles. Even eleven do not. Barcelona need to sign a few attacking players who they could be called upon when the MSN aren’t firing. And of course the replacement for a certain Andres Iniesta.
As for Zizou, he needs to make sure the likes of Isco, James and Asensio stay at Madrid.
