Sandeep Sharma: The Tormentor at the Top

Sandeep Sharma Wah Cricket

When T20 cricket started off, it was considered as a murderous format for the bowlers. Everything in the format suited the batsmen and the bowlers were there only to be hit. Several years have passed away since then and a lot of water has passed under the bridge. However, the comeback of the bowlers in this format has been remarkable and one of the most interesting stories has been that of Kings XI Punjab pacer Sandeep Sharma.

The Punjab pacer has been phenomenal with new ball this season, picking up 14 wickets in the 2017 season so far. His ability to swing the ball during the powerplay has worked wonders for him and a lot of big players like Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle have found it hard to negotiate the movement.

Sharma put up another impressive show today by picking the wickets of arguably three of the greatest batsmen in T20 cricket – Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers off successive overs. He ended up with figures of three for 22 off his four overs. Interestingly, out of 14 wickets he has taken so far, seven have been of the opening batsmen.

The Punjab pacer is currently the fourth-highest wicket taker in this season and his economy of less than 6.5 proves his worth. His knack for picking up big wickets at the top is what any side needs and it’s an irony that despite his consistent performance, Punjab have found it difficult to manage victories.

Let’s have a look at few of his stats:

  1. He is the only bowler in the world to have dismissed Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the same match.
  2. This was the fourth time that Sandeep dismissed Gayle, joint most by any bowler alongside R Ashwin.
  3. Sandeep has dismissed Kohli five times in IPL so far. This the second highest number of times that a bowler has got better of Kohli. Nehra still remains at top of the heap with six dismissals.
