Celta Vigo Vs Manchester United saw the visitors take home a vital 1 goal lead in the 1st leg of the Europa League semifinal with Marcus Rashford’s free-kick acting as the decisive difference. Celta had the game’s first real chance after Wass headed wide from Radoja’s cross.
United then came in strong and should have killed the tie off in the 1st half of the game. Mkhitaryan blasted his shot straight at the keeper in a one on one opportunity and soon Lingard followed suite by doing the same. Celta were not massively threatening and United did enough defensively to take the advantage to Old Trafford.
Here are the 5 things we learnt from the Celta-Manchester United clash at the Balaídos
Marcus Rashford To The Rescue Again
❤️⚽️ Jose Mourinho: “He’s a 19-year-old kid in love with football. He works, he’s mature and what matters is not his age but his quality.
Marcus Rashford has done immensely well following Ibrahimovic’s departure through injury. There were doubts about the 19 year old’s form and mentality but he has shunned down the critics by being pivotal to Manchester United’s Champions League hopes.
Rashford has directly been involved in the last three goals for Manchester United in the Europa League scoring 2 and assisting one. Ibrahimovic’s unfortunate absence could have just opened the door for Marcus Rashford’s ability to be put on show.
Pogba Is Important in Manchester United’s Gameplay
Paul Pogba’s game by numbers vs. Celta Vigo: 100% take-ons completed 49 passes 5 take-ons 3 interceptions 3 clearances 2 shots 👊
Paul Pogba has been victim to a fair share of criticism due to his topsy turvy season at Manchester United. The Frenchman commanded a world record price tag and has often been bashed by the critics to have not lived upto the fee Manchester United paid. The former Juventus man though was crucial for the Reds at the Balaídos by commanding the midfield. Pogba kept the play moving with his intricate passing and was powerful in terms of agility and strength. Manchester United struggled without him in the derby against Manchester City and that at home to Swansea City. It shows how important Pogba is at United heart in the midfield.
Celta Vigo Lacked The Necessary Punch To Take on United
Big win for United against a very average Celta Vigo. Tie still alive at 1-0, but United deserved the win.
Though they started brightly with the first clear chance of the game falling to Wass, Celta lacked the guile to put United under any sort of pressure. Manchester United were too comfortable in midfield with Celta having put no pressure on the likes of Herrera and Pogba. The likes of Guidetti and Aspas did little to trouble the United defence. Romero made some routine stops but Celta did nothing exquisite to trouble the Argentinian.
United’s New King Eric!
Eric Bailly, the black Nemanja Vidic👊🏼 https://t.co/U4ewyhdudG
Eric Bailly has undoubtedly proven to be a mainstay for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. The Ivory Coast international was again pivotal at the back, helping United comeback with a vital clean sheet. Bailly along with Blind forged a strong wall to keep the likes of Guidetti and Aspas at bay.
Bailly was an injury concern after he was substituted at Old Trafford against Swansea after pulling up. Mourinho lauded his 30 million pound signing after he fought his injury issues in time to be fit for the clash against Celta. It is a no brainer that Bailly will have a crucial role to play in that of the return leg and the possible final at Stockholm.
When Old Trafford wants us to win, we win!” 👊👊 Jose Mourinho is in defiant mood ahead of next week’s second leg. 🎙 @DesKellyBTS https://t.co/NDnnNmzvTI
It is indeed advantage Manchester United as they take home to Old Trafford a crucial away goal that could prove to be the deciding factor for their Champions League hopes. United have certainly a more difficult run in the Premier League with away games at Arsenal, Spurs and Southampton. Taking a win and an away goal to Old Trafford will certainly motivate Mourinho and his side with the Europa League in context. This win will though certainly provoke Mourinho to make some major changes to United’s lineup at the Emirates.
