India has produced some of the finest openers in the history of cricket and that is the reason why there is always something special about Indian openers. There was Sunil Gavaskar, whose rock-solid defense foiled all opposition plans, there was Sachin Tendulkar, who rewrote the history books and changed the way limited overs cricket is played. Then there was the ‘destructive’ Virender Sehwag and another modern-day player who has joined the list is Mumbai batsman Rohit ‘Hitman’ Sharma.
It is Rohit’s birthday today and we wish him all the best and loads of luck for his future. A player known for his superb natural talent, he could not make full use of it in the initial parts of his career. However, he has almost made-up for all those failures with superb performances at the top of the order. On his birthday, we bring you some of the Best Moments of Hitman’s career.
1. 264 vs Sri Lanka, 13th November 2014
Rohit was making a comeback to the side after a long injury layoff at his favourite Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He got off to a slow start, as expected from a man taking the field in competitive match after months. However, what followed was simply unbelievable. After reaching his half-century, he sent the Sri Lankans on leather hunt, hitting sixes and fours. He crossed 100, then 150, then 200 and did not stop before compiling 264. His innings had 33 fours and 9 sixes and it was definitely one of the best moments of his career.
2. 209 vs Australia, 2nd November 2013
The day Rohit Sharma followed Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag to get his name into the elite list of players to have scored a double hundred in ODI. In the decisive final ODI of the seven match series, the Mumbai Indians skipper pummeled 209 off 158 balls with 12 fours and 16 sixes. The ease with which he cleared the boundary sent bowlers into fear. It was certainly the day Rohit Sharma justified why he is regarded as one of the best modern day batsmen. This was definitely the career defining moment for Rohit.
3. Hat-trick in IPL 2009 vs Mumbai Indians
Those were the early days of the IPL and Rohit Sharma used to ply his trade for Deccan Chargers. Gilchrist was in need of an extra bowler and Gilchrist threw the ball to Rohit. What happened after that is history as he dismissed Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh and JP Duminy off consecutive balls to record the second ever hat-trick in the IPL. He ended up with figures of 4 for six, enough to win him the Man of the Match.
4. 106 vs South Africa in T20I, 2nd October 2015
Another great moment in Rohit’s career, when he became just second Indian batsman to score a century in all the three formats of the game. He scored 109 off 66 balls with 12 fours and five sixes, sending the likes of Rabada and Morris on leather hunt. Although it was a historic day for Rohit, it did not end perfectly as India lost to the Proteas.
5. Taking Mumbai Indians from brink of exit to IPL 2013 title
Another magical journey started for Rohit Sharma from his favourite Eden Gardens. Ricky Ponting was leading the Mumbai Indians side but the performance of the team under him was poor. He was himself not being able to do well. So he dropped himself and started the journey of Rohit, the captain. The extra responsibility brought in improved performances from the opener and it also turned the team’s fortune. The team, which was on brink of exit, ended up lifting the IPL 6 title, a remarkable turnaround from where they stood.
So this is the list of some of the best moments in the career of our beloved opener Rohit Sharma. We wish him the best for future and expect him to produce more such magical moments in future.
