Kolkata Knight Riders: Making big run-chases look simple!

Gautam Gambhir attempts a shot

The Kolkata Knight Riders have been the team to look at in this IPL when it comes to chasing. They have chased 170+ totals with around 20 balls to spare on more than three occasions.

In their first game of the season against the Gujarat Lions, “Lynnsanity’ prevailed and a target of 184 was conquered within 14.5 overs. It was followed by the drubbing of Kings XI Punjab when they chased 171 in less than 17 overs. Today, it was another masterclass while chasing as they deflated RPS by chasing 182 in 18.1 overs. In other words, they have toyed with big totals. Let’s decode the secret behind the rich vein of form.

Top Order Blitzkrieg

The KKR top order has been in stupendous form this season with all the players doing very well. Opening with Chris Lynn proved to be a masterstroke as he demolished bowling attacks in the first few matches. His injury created a void at the top and what unfolded was simply unexpected. Sunil Narine started to open the batting and has been brilliant so far, giving a strong momentum at beginning of the innings. Let’s have a look at some figures of the opening batsman.

1. Gautam Gambhir- 305 runs at a strike-rate of 136.77, FYS Fantasy Points: 437

The KKR captain has been phenomenal and his strike rate this season has been the striking point. With the team batting deep, Gambhir has thrown caution to winds and has played freely in the tournament so far. He is the proud holder of the orange cap.

2. Robin Uthappa- 272 runs at a strike-rate of 165.85, FYS Fantasy Points: 465

The wicket-keeper batsman has been at his diminutive best this season, striking sixes and fours at will. He has been tearing apart the bowling line-ups and has accumulated 272 runs while doing so. He has also been fearless this season.

The ‘Silent Killer’ has performed at crucial junctures and has been a vital cog in the KKR wheel. The Indian middle-order batsman has raced his way to 260 runs within limited opportunities and has played some match-winning innings.

4. Chris Lynn- 125 runs at a strike-rate of 192.30, FYS Fantasy Points: 170

Although he got injured only after 2 matches, he showed the way how big scores are chased. The Aussie hard-hitter changed the way KKR chased big targets and look, what the result has been.

5. Sunil Narine- 137 runs at a strike-rate of 182.66, FYS Fantasy Points: 320

The surprise package of this season. KKR have gone one step ahead of Big Bash side Melbourne Renegades by continuously opening their batting with Sunil Narine and the fearless approach of the Caribbean means he has provided some vital quick runs at the top of the order.

The success of the top order has been vital behind the successful chase sequence of KKR. Their fans would want them to carry on in the same way and reach the summit come the end of the season.
