FYS Stat Attack: Alexis Sanchez’s contribution to Arsenal this season

Premier League Transfer Rumours featuring Sanchez and his move to Manchester City

Arsenal knocked rivals Manchester City out of the FA Cup when they came out as 2-1 winners in the semifinals of the competition. And yet again their main man Alexis Sanchez came to the rescue as he scored the winning goal in the extra-time for the Gunners in the fierce battle between the two clubs. In spite of Arsenal and Wenger’s woes this season, the Chilean has kept his impeccable run of goals and assists going.

Of course, football is a team game. But without a shadow of doubt, Sanchez’s presence in the side has saved Arsenal from further desolations. Though Arsenal are 6th in the league, Sanchez has done a world of good for the Gunners. It is no surprise that Arsenal are desperately trying to get hold of the lethal forward.

But in numbers, just how important the Chilean has been to the Gunners and how would’ve they fared without him? Well apparently, not only is he the highest scorer in the league for Arsenal, he also has the highest assists under his belt.

Compared to his 13 goals scored in 30 appearances last season, he has scored 19 goals in the Premier League so far, assisting a further 9 in the process in the 32 matches played so far. This means that the forward has been directly involved in 28 goals for Arsenal in the league this season, just under half of Arsenal’s goals (63) this season. To be precise, he has been directly involved in 44.44% of Arsenals goals this season so far in the league. Added to that, Alexis has also created the most number of chances (71) along with 62 key passes.

Arsenal do boast an array of talented players in the squad with the likes of Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny at the helm. But none of them can be classified as truly ‘world class’ unlike Alexis Sanchez. Since his debut, Sanchez has provided more assists than any other Arsenal player in all competitions.

Stats reveal that Arsenal could’ve been far below in the points tally if not for Sanchez’s heroics in some games where he proved to be the difference. If not for Sanchez, Wenger’s men may have dropped up to 9 points in the league in 5 games where Sanchez’s goal had rescued them some points. This means that in current scenario Arsenal would’ve had 48 points out of 32 games, 16 points adrift of the top 4 meaning top 4 could’ve been out of the equation.

Given his contribution to the club, especially this season, it is clear that Wenger cannot afford to lose Sanchez. Even apart from assists and goals, he is a natural leader on the pitch and gives an attacking flair to Wenger’s side.

Arsenal may not be the club he deserves considering his voracious appetite of winning, but if Wenger holds on to this guy along with signing a few big names, Sanchez can prove to be even more deadly on the big stage and guide Arsenal back to title winning ways soon!
