Gujarat Lions finally opened their account as they registered a 7-wicket victory over Rising Pune Supergiant on their home turf in Rajkot. The Lions put in a clinical performance both with the bat and ball which resulted in their victory with two overs still to go.
Here’s a look at the Heroes and the Zeroes from the match.
Andrew Tye (4-0-17-5)
When Gujarat Lions drafted in Tye for today’s game, little did they know that they had just answered the questions that were being raised over their dismal bowling shows. The Australian, playing the first game of his IPL career, responded by picking up the second hat-trick of the day when he dismissed Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwari and Shardul Thakur off consecutive deliveries in the last over of the RPS innings to finish off with a well-deserved fifer.
The former Kiwi Captain was at his attacking best as he, with able support from Dwayne Smith, plundered the helpless RPS attack. He struck 5 fours and 3 skiers in his 32-ball 49 run effort and was instrumental in unsettling the lead RPS bowler this season, Imran Tahir. He provided a flying start to the Lions through their 53-ball 93 run opening stand which very much sealed the game for the Lions.
The big West Indian lived up-to his name as an all-rounder as he contributed with both bat and ball in the first win of the season for the Lions. He took the prized wicket of Captain Steve Smith while giving away only 10 runs in his two overs. He also blasted his way to a 30-ball 47 which included 8 fours and a six.
Dhoni’s horrible IPL continued as he was given LBW off Jadeja’s bowling for an eight-ball 5. This is his third consecutive failure from four matches in this IPL as he remained not out in the Maharashtra Derby. He was pushed down the order at number 6 giving him the license to attack the GL bowlers but that was not to happen as he walked off in disappointment.
RPS’ opening woes continued as their premier opener was dismissed for a golden duck when Raina pulled off a screamer in the slips off the bowling of Praveen. Rahane might consider himself unlucky but his dismissal resulted in another flop opening show for RPS.

The most successful RPS bowler of the IPL so far was targeted by the openers of the Gujarat Lions. Tahir was smacked all around the park by the Lions’ opening duo as he went for 35 runs in his first two overs. He didn’t get any relief after the departure of the openers as the skipper took charge of the attack against him which resulted in his bowling figures being distorted to 4-0-53-1.
