Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Gujarat Lions by 10 wickets in the 3rd match of the Indian Premier League 2017. Gujarat Lions posted 183 on a good batting track courtesy of Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik, but KKR made light work of the total as both Chris Lynn and Gautam Gambhir were on fire.
Here we look at the Heroes and Zeroes from the game :
1) Chris Lynn :
The Australian carried his good form into the IPL as he smashed the Gujarat Lions bowlers to all parts of the ground. Lynn came out to open the batting with Gautam Gambhir ahead of Robin Uthappa and justified the team management's decision as he took the game away from the Lions. Lynn's 93 included 6 fours and 8 huge sixes and he has made a stake for a regular place in the side even when Shakib Al Hasan joins the squad.

Lynn was in scintillating form in the Big Bash as well and if KKR are to win their 3rd title, then they would need Lynn to carry his form throughout the course of the tournament.
2) Gautam Gambhir :
The southpaw was also in brilliant form as he scored a valuable 76 off only 48 balls which included 12 fours. Gambhir has led KKR to two IPL titles and has been a wonderful servant for the franchise which struggled to make its mark in the initial seasons.
Gambhir has been out of the Indian limited overs squad for quite some time now and was not expected to be in the Champions Trophy squad, but with Shikhar Dhawan out of touch and India lacking an experienced opener at the moment, he might just get a look in if he manages to score big for the majority of the season.
3) Dinesh Karthik :
The Tamil Nadu wicket keeper batsman has been in superb form in the domestic circuit and carried his form into the IPL as he smashed the KKR bowlers to all parts of the ground. Karthik has been tipped to travel to England for the Champions Trophy and he did not do harm his chances as he propelled the Gujarat Lions to 183 with a brilliant 47.
Karthik is only 31 and he can still contribute a lot to the national side and while his team ended up on the losing side, he did his reputation no harm. Surely, the selectors would take notice if he carries on with his great form.
1) Jason Roy :
The England opener was one amongst four overseas openers for the Gujarat Lions, but failed to make a mark in his debut match as he was snapped up by Piyush Chawla on a paltry score of 14.

While it is only early days for the destructive opener, he needs to make the most of his opportunities if he wants to make the playing eleven on a regular basis. Dwayne Bravo is sure to come back into the side when fit and that would mean one of either Dwayne Smith, Aaron Finch or Jason Roy would have to make way for the Carribean. If Roy wants to make a mark in the IPL, which he is capable of, he needs to deliver for the Lions.
2) Manpreet Gony :
The tall Punjab pacer was highly succesfull for the Chennai Super Kings in the earlier seasons of the IPL and also got a call up to the Indian National side. But he hasn't lived up to his promise ever since and has been in and out of the IPL teams he has played for. Gony has the ability to extract bounce and generates good pace as well , but is too inaccurate and as a result was taken to the cleaners by Lynn and Gambhir.
Gony was snapped up by the Lions when no one else believed in him and he needs to live up to the faith shown in him by the franchise. He was smashed for 32 runs in 2 overs and Lynn took great liking to his bowling. He needs to step up in the next few games or be ready to face the drop.
3) Chris Woakes :
The English All rounder was snapped up by KKR as the replacement for star all rounder Andre Russell and was expected to fill the void left by the absence of the hard hitting Carribean superstar. But he did not have a memorable debut and was taken to the cleaners by Dinesh Karthik and Suresh Raina. Woakes is a really good all rounder and has done well for the English side, but he did not help his cause here as he conceded 35 runs in the 3 overs he bowled and did not get the chance to bat.
With Shakib expected to return for the next game and Lynn delivering a match winning knock, Woakes' place in the side is in danger and he might not find a place in the eleven come the next game.
