Kawhi Leonard and that Mamba Mentality

Kawhi Leonard is one of the most clutch players in the league. The Spurs small forward has been a crucial part of the team’s 59-17 run this season averaging 25.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Spurs’ chances of winning the league rests in Kawhi’s big hands.

One of the most versatile players in the league, Kawhi is also a probable candidate to win defensive player of the year for a second time, his only rival being Draymond Green of the Warriors. But it’s not his spectacular offence or tight defence that makes him special, it’s his Mamba Mentality. Coined by the Mamba himself, it’s the ability to give your best throughout every minute of the game. “I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.” These were Kobe’s words when asked about his Mamba mentality.

Kawhi turns his game up another notch in the 4th quarter, time and again assigned to take the game winning shot and making it. It's that confidence that makes him special. Being able to lead your team to a victory in the clutch, trusted with the game-winner. Only Isiah Thomas Jr has scored more points in the 4th quarter than The Klaw.

The leading MVP candidates, Mr Triple Double Russell Westbrook and James Harden haven’t been able to rack up wins against the big teams in the league, something the Spurs have done well. Kawhi is now a strong contender for the MVP along with Harden and Westbrook. In his last game against the Rockets, Kawhi took the clutch three followed by a huge block on James Harden producing one of the best offensive and defensive plays to win the game for the Spurs.

In my opinion, Kawhi deserves that MVP as much as any of the other contenders. He has not only been a great asset for the Spurs both defensively and offensively, he’s also managed to step up in big games more than Westbrook or Harden have and his Mamba mentality is on point at the moment. We can’t wait to see what the Klaw has in store for us in the play-offs.
