India finally showed some class as they clawed their way back in the series after a shocking defeat in the 1st test match against Australia in Pune.
As the teams prepare themselves to play the next match starting from 16th March in Ranchi, we look and analyse the results and records of India in the 3rd test match played in the last five series against the Aussies. (The 2010/11 is not included as it was a 2 match series)
Perth, January 2008
Result: India won by 72 runs.
Thanks to outstanding half centuries by greats Dravid (93) and Tendulkar (71), India posted a modest 330 in the 1st innings. Australia in reply fell short by 100+ runs which provided the advantage to India who then went on and built a huge lead of 413. Australia tried hard to bounce back with Clarke's 81 and decent contributions by Hussey, Ponting and Johnson but lost wickets at regular intervals and finally were all out on 340 as India registered a satisfying win by 72 runs. India lost the series 3-1.
Delhi, November 2008
Result: Match drawn
The 3rd test played during 2008 series in India was played on a pitch which only favoured the batsmen. India batted in the 1st innings and overpowered the bowlers completely with a score of 613-7d. Gambhir and Laxman both recorded double hundreds. Australia replied with the same power with the help of Clarke’s century and satisfying contribution by other batsmen. Laxman fired again with a fifty supported well by Tendulkar in the 3rd innings and built a good lead but the match had become a dead rubber by then with Australia comfortably remaining unbeaten on 31-0 at the end of Day 5.

Result: Australia won by an innings and 37 runs.
The Aussies completely crushed India in the most forgetful series for the Indians down under. The 3rd test saw a masterclass performance by the Aussies. India was restricted to a low score of 161 in the 1st innings. Australia dominated with the bat and posted a mammoth lead of 208. India completely underperformed and was all out on 171 with only Virat who showed some fight with his batting. Australia registered a dominating victory by an innings and 37 runs.
Mohali, March 2013
Result: India won by 6 wickets.
The 3rd test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in 2013 in India was a party for the batsmen. Cowan, Warner and now captain Smith batted brilliantly and helped Australia to reach a huge total of 408. Vijay and Dhawan’s 289 1st wicket stand shifted the balance of the match in favour of the Indians, who managed to get a small lead despite a collapse by the batting order. The Indian bowlers restricted the Aussies to 223 in the 2nd innings followed by a 6 wicket win for the hosts in the 4th innings with India succesfully chasing the small target of 136. India won the series 4-0.
Melbourne, December 2014
Result: Match drawn
Australia dominated with their batting in the first innings and outclassed the Indian bowling side thanks to Smith’s superb unbeaten knock of 192 and decent contributions by Rogers, Watson, Haddin and Harris. India too didn’t disappoint in their first innings with Virat and Rahane’s glittering hundreds. Australia set a good target of 383 for India. India lost wickets at regular intervals and just managed to pull a draw with Virat’s match saving innings of 54 supported well by Rahane with India finishing at 174-6 at the end of day 5’s play.
