Chelsea has been an unstoppable force this season and showing no signs of slowing down having moved 10 points clear at the top of the league. While players like Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have grabbed the majority of the headlines, there is one man whose contribution should not go unnoticed. Diminutive French midfielder N' Golo Kante has carried on his brilliant form of last season and is aiming to create history by becoming the first player to win consecutive Premier League titles for two different teams. While there is no doubt that he is amongst the best midfielders in Europe, some experts have claimed that Kante should win the PFA Player of the Year.
While the chances of a defensive midfielder winning the award are slim, one cannot bet against Kante given his performances this season. While many have said that players like Hazard, Costa or Sanchez deserve the award, the contribution of Kante in Chelsea's brilliant run cannot be ignored. The midfielder has become a vital cog in Antonio Conte's midfield and he has single-handily made the position of a defensive midfielder look 'fashionable' and 'sexy'. While his performances last season for Leicester last season garnered great praise, he has added another dimension to his game playing alongside better quality players.
But Kante has continued in the same unrelenting fashion winning the most number of tackles and interceptions in the Premier League. He has won more tackles in 18 months than any other player has in 3 years. Kante has won an astonishing 125 tackles and 61 interceptions, while he also has 29 clearances to him. No midfielder in the England comes close to matching his stats. The only thing that goes against Kante is that majority of his passes are either sidewards or backwards and if he is to be as successful as Sergio Busquets, then he needs to develop the attacking side of his game.
Eden Hazard recently joked that playing with Kante is like playing with twins. There have also been jokes like 71% of the earth is covered with water, the rest is covered by Kante because the energetic midfielder covers so much ground, it is like two players playing at a time. While the chances of him winning the best player award are slim, you cannot totally rule him out, Kante wins everything. Just hope what Hazard said was a joke!
