Who let the Dogs Out? Brazil Open has Canine plan to replace ball boys

How often have you seen ball boys being replaced by the ball dogs on a tennis court? Not even once I’m sure but one such incident happened during Brazil Open in Sao Paulo when tournament organisers decided to have a little fun by bringing in ball dogs in a bid to promote two local animal shelters.

Last Saturday, six pups were brought to the clay courts for the ATP World Tour 250 tournament for an exhibition match between the Brazilian duo of Marcelo Demoliner and Joao Zwetsch. This year’s ball dogs were brought from two local non-profit dog shelters – ‘Project Second Chance’ (Proyecto Segunda Chance) and ‘Dogs without Owners’ (Cão Sem Dono).

The dogs had been specially trained to become ball dogs at this year's Brazil Open tennis tournament. All these dogs have been adopted by the tournament officials last year with an aim to raise awareness among the general public to provide shelter to all the pets without homes.

The noble idea first implemented last year in the same tournament, when four pups became "ball boys". One of them was even named after the great Serena Williams by her new owners. Watch the video below –
