New Zealand vs South Africa : 5th ODI | South Africa crush New Zealand to win series

South Africa clinch the series as New Zealand's batting collapsed like nine pins in the 5th ODI at Aukland.

Aukland haunts Kiwis one again!

South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. It was the same ground where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the semifinals of the 2015 World Cup against New Zealand. Guptill, who scored a record-breaking century in the previous ODI, opened his account after facing 10 deliveries.

Rabada set up the New Zealand opener’s dismissal perfectly. After firing a few short deliveries, he bowled a rapid yorker which left Guptill’s stumps disturbed.

Williamson and Brownlie steadied the ship for a while before the latter decided to check AB de Villiers’ fielding skills, which left Williamson stranded. Brownlie then played all over a delivery from Phelukwayo. New Zealand found it tough to score which eventually led to the downfall of Taylor and Ronchi. New Zealand were reeling at 72 for 5 with a dire need of a partnership.

Neesham struck a big six but was dismissed for the second time in the series by Rabada. De Grandhomme and Santner stitched a 45-run partnership, taking their side past the 100 run mark. The former is the find of the series for the hosts as he has shone with both bat and ball. The duo was given a reprieve by the South African fielders. After striking the ball well, Santner drove one straight to Duminy at point.

The all-rounder was nowhere when Duminy hit the timber directly. Southee struck a six but was caught by Tahir off his own bowling. de Grandhomme was the last one to be dismissed when he was dismissed leg before off Tahir’s bowling. New Zealand were bowled out for mere 149 with more than 8 overs to spare.

Faf du Plessis & AB de Villiers take SA home!

South Africa's chase didn't start well as de Kock was dismissed in the third over of the innings. Amla looked shaky and never got going. He was dismissed after facing 28 deliveries, scoring just 8 runs in his horrendous stay. JP Duminy was the next one to go after hitting it straight to the hands of the cover fielder. New Zealand had some hope. But those hopes were tarnished by du Plessis and AB de Villiers.

The duo added 40 runs off as many deliveries with de Villiers being the aggressor. Though the skipper scored just 23 runs, it depleted the confidence of the New Zealand bowlers. He smacked a couple of boundaries and the same number of sixes in his 21-ball stay. David Miller and du Plessis finished off the proceedings with their unbeaten 62-run stand.

Miller once said, 'If it's in the arc, hit it out of the park’. And he kept up his word with his quickfire knock as South Africa won their seventh series against New Zealand in the past two decades.
