Golden Shoe 2016-17 update: Imperious Messi leapfrogs Cavani, Suarez

Lionel Messi’s brace in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Leganes in La Liga on Sunday was enough for him to overtake PSG’s Edinson Cavani in the Golden Shoe rankings. He shares the top spot with Roma’s Edin Dzeko and Juventus’s Gonzalo Higuain.

Due to no Premier League action this week, the likes of Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were not able to increase their points tally in the standings. Cavani failed to score from the penalty spot in PSG’s 0-0 draw with Toulouse and hence couldn’t add to his total as well. Luis Suarez also remains in contention at 5th spot along with Bundesliga players Lewandowski and Aubameyang.

Messi the Messiah

The Argentine striker left it late to rescue all the three points for the Catalan Club in a nervy 2-1 win over Leganes. The visitors delivered an impressive performance but weren’t able to snatch away a point from the Catalan club.

Though the Barca players were elated with a 90th minute winner, Messi didn't look too thrilled. Of course, the 4-0 battering at PSG might have affected him, but he is still expected to salvage Barcelona during nervy moments. Leo is a strong contender to win the Golden Shoe.

Suarez just behind Leo

Though Luis Suarez wasn’t on the scoresheet against Leganes, he has been a very influential character at Camp Nou since his arrival from Liverpool. Against Leganes too, he assisted Messi’s first goal in the 4th minute. Having scored 18 goals in the league, he is 5th in the Golden Shoe standings just 2 points behind his teammate Messi. In spite of his team’s recent woes, the lethal goalscoring ability of the striker is enough to mark his contention for Golden Shoe.

Serie A pair up top in the standings

Edin Dzeko of AS Roma and Gonzalo Higuain of Juventus continue to impress with their goal scoring record for their respective teams. Both strikers have netted 19 goals in the league which has had a significant impact on the Serie A title challenges of both teams. Juventus are top of the table with 63 points while AS Roma are just behind them at 2nd with 56 points.

Higuain scored a goal in Juventus’ 4-1 rout of Palermo on Friday, while Edin Dzeko contributed with a goal in AS Roma’s 4-1 win over Torino on Sunday.

Given both teams’ form this season, Dzeko and Higuain should remain in the Golden Shoe contention till the very end. But Higuain has a greater chance considering his better form and his side's league form.

Roma are on a great run as well but consistency will determine their fate. With big games against Inter and Napoli coming up, it is to be seen whether Dzeko can sustain his goalscoring momentum.

Bundesliga duo hanging in there

Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are also well and truly in contention for the Golden Shoe. Lewandowski scored a crucial stoppage-time equalizer for Bayern in their 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin and took his goals tally to 17 goals in the league.

While Aubameyang didn’t score in Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Wolfsburg, he still has 17 goals to his name in the league. Both strikers are in steady contention to win the Golden Shoe.
